Aquatic Park Cruise, November 14, 15 & 16 2003

Joan & Jim Carolan Cliodhna

Plan to meet at Aquatic Park, which is west of Pier 39 and directly south of Alcatraz Island. Cliodhna will be arriving Friday evening 11/14 in order to capture the best anchorage.  Everyone joining this cruise out can either join Friday evening or Saturday morning. We will be rafting up so please wait for instructions on where to go.  If you have extra fenders please bring them along. Communication will be on VHF channel 72.

Since this is a bit late in the season and there is thus some risk of a front coming through so we might have to cancel but, then again the weather could be beautiful.  UPDATES WILL BE POSTED ON THIS WEB SITE.

We plan raft to the east side of the park. This would be a couple hundred feet from the big schooner and close to what Jim believes will be the best place to park the dinghy's and secure them. There is no dingy dock in
aquatic park and one should probably bring some chain or cable to secure the dingy, either to a piling or other dinghy's.

There are many possible activities around the park including fine and not-so- fine dining, and the maritime museum. Jim's thinking is that we should plan to be prepared for a potluck both nights due to the many unknowns associated with leaving the
dinghy's for extended period of time. We will be having dinner onboard Saturday evening. Clio will host the potluck on Saturday night and we will leave Friday informal. Bring along food for shared dinner (a dish to share and a hors d’oeuvre) Bring your favorite game to play after dinner.

You may motor carefully into the park with the sails down. BE VERY CAREFUL OF SWIMMERS. They swim all over the park and even into the bay, and there are lots of them. Use extreme caution when entering and motoring in the park. It
is best to have a watch on the bow if  possible.

After breakfast onboard Sunday morning, we will row ashore in dinghies  about 1100 hours  to enjoy the nearby San Francisco sights—the Maritime Museum, Ghirardelli Square and some interesting sailing ships.

Confirm with Jim Carolan by November 13th if you can participate by email jim.carolan@beam-reach.net or by phone (home) (925) 672-5954 or Cell (925) 324-0476

Please remember, if you’re uncomfortable about conditions anywhere on a cruise, you should stay in port even if the rest of the Fleet continues on. All cruises are for enjoyment and personal satisfaction, not danger. Remember we are now into the winter season and the weather systems can change rapidly. Check the weather often via radio and the web.

Safety: You should have all the Coast Guard mandated safety equipment on board, wear life jackets with harnesses (or use a separate harness) when at sea have jack lines rigged, and have tethers available. If you do not know what any of these are, or are not sure how to rig or use them, you can find that information in most sailing books.

You should also have the appropriate charts on board and a working GPS. As usual, boat to boat communication will be on channel 72. (also Monitor Channel 16) Be sure to fly your Fleet 9 burgee.
